Monument Valley, well known for its characterizing cluster of vast sandstone formations, is a region of the Colorado Plateau, located on the Arizona-Utah border, close to the Four Corners Area. The elevation of the valley floor ranges from 5,000 to 6,000 feet (1,500 to 1,800 m) above sea level and was carved out by meandering rivers over millions of years. Due to iron oxide contained in the weathering siltstone the rock formations get their characteristic vivid red color.
